WebDav is an IETF proposed standard. It's specified in RFC 2518 (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2518.txt).

Apple uses WebDav to support its .mac system for synchronizing multiple devices across an internet connection and for collaborative applications like the internet supported iCal software. --AndyPierce
